Sandisk Extreme III Memory Cards

Extreme III Product Line Based On SanDisk’s New ESP Technology, A Major Technological Breakthrough

The SanDisk Extreme III line of CompactFlash, SD and Memory Stick PRO digital film cards are according to SanDisk Corporation the world's fastest flash memory cards. The CompactFlash and SD cards have minimum write and read speeds of 20 megabytes per second (MB/sec.), while the Memory Stick PRO has minimum write and read speeds of 18 MB/sec. The SanDisk Extreme III cards, which range in capacity between one and four gigabytes (GB), have doubled the performance speeds of SanDisk's predecessor Extreme product line which currently has the fastest working cards in many of today's digital single lens reflex (SLR) cameras.

The new SanDisk Extreme III cards are targeted primarily at advanced and professional photographers who require high-performance flash memory storage cards for new high-end digital cameras. The cards will start shipping worldwide in October-November to high-end, retail photo specialty stores.

Yoram Cedar, SanDisk's senior vice-president of engineering, said, "SanDisk has developed a new ESP (Enhanced Super-Parallel Processing) technology that gives our new SanDisk Extreme III line its performance advantages. ESP technology is a major technology breakthrough that combines our in-house design of both NAND flash memory chips and controller chips using advanced 32-bit RISC processing and leading edge algorithms. Our engineers worked closely with major camera manufacturers in developing our new ESP technology."

Cedar also explained, "ESP has super-parallel write and read operations that are coupled with an accelerated flash data bus architecture to allow data to be transferred at twice the rate of most competitive cards. In addition, the ESP architecture streamlines every aspect of read and write data transfer operations through advanced hardware automation. The ESP architecture effectively removes the card as the bottleneck in data storage applications."

The cards also include RescuePRO software that allows photographers to easily recover accidentally deleted images, lost digital images or data. The software on these cards is compatible with both Windows and Mac and requires no driver download or special card reader.

SanDisk Extreme III CompactFlash cards will be sold in 1, 2 and 4GB capacities with suggested retail prices ranging from US$139.99 to US$559.99 (EUR 135 to EUR 540, excluding VAT). The SanDisk Extreme III SD card will be sold in a 1GB capacity at a suggested price of US$139.99 (EUR 139, excluding VAT). And Memory Stick PRO Extreme III cards, sized in 1 and 2GB capacities, will carry suggested price tags of US$279.99 and US$559.99 (EUR 289 and EUR 576, excluding VAT).

Toshiba and Sandisk Unite to Build Chip Plant

Sept. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Toshiba Corp. and SanDisk Corp. created a joint venture and will spend $2.5 billion to build a semiconductor plant in Japan to meet demand for wireless phones with cameras, music players and other features.

SanDisk, the world's biggest maker of flash-memory cards for consumer electronics, and Toshiba, Japan's second-biggest chipmaker, signed an agreement last week to form Flash Partners Ltd., SanDisk said in a regulatory filing. The plant in Yokkaichi is expected to begin production of 300-millimeter chips by the end of 2005.

Demand for memory cards for consumer electronics is increasing as companies including Sprint Corp. and Verizon Wireless introduce cell phones that do more than make phone calls. Flash memory stores digital photos or music files and retains data when devices are shut off.

Toshiba, based in Tokyo, and Sunnyvale, California-based SanDisk each will get half of the chips made at the plant, said Lori Barker Padon, SanDisk's director of investor relations. SanDisk will use its chips in flash memory cards for multimedia cellular phones, cameras and USB flash disk drives.

The companies jointly opened a 200-millimeter wafer plant in 2002. That plant is running at capacity, and other chips are being purchased from companies including Samsung Electronics Co., Barker Padon said.

Toshiba owns 50.1 percent of the new company, and SanDisk owns 49.9 percent. Toshiba said Tuesday that it will spend about $1.8 billion in a separate agreement with Canon Inc. to make flat- panel screens through a new company named SED Inc.

Shares of SanDisk rose 39 cents to $25.90 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market composite trading. Toshiba shares fell 5 yen to 411 yen Thursday on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Pretec 2GB MMC 4 Card - I didn't know that they were this big!

A friend asked me today what were the biggest capacity MMC cards. I wondered about this one because having stocked Sandisk for almost a year now, I never saw anything bigger than a 128MB MMC (multimedia card) - recently a distributor asked me to sell 512MB MMC. I thought, "surely there have got to be bigger cards than this!" with the SD Cards and Compact Flash cards now available in 1GB-4GB sizes (in Australia).

I came across this article at DPReview that talks about a 2GB MMC flash card. I know that this is not going to seem much in a couple of months time, but wow! This 2GB Pretec MMC 4.0 card is also very fast with write speeds of around 18MB/sec (120x)!!! Get this, read speeds are around 22.5MB per second (150x)!!! Now that's fast...

- Sandisk Ultra II Compact Flash 512MB
- Sandisk Ultra II Compact Flash 1GB
- Sandisk Ultra II Compact Flash 2GB

For those unfamiliar with what Compact Flash is, here's a concise definition that I found on Google:

"Data storage A standard for small-sized, non-volatile memory cards and other peripherals used in mobile computers, PDAs, digital cameras, and some MP3 players. Whilst only around 3x4cm in size (and only a few mm thick) compact flash memory cards are available in sizes of 128Mb+. IBM also now manufacture various "microdrive" hard disks to fit in compact flash (CF) slots, with a current maximum capacity of 1Gb."

Not another memory card format!?

Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and some local IT firms will soon mass produce a new type of memory card called “μcard”, which will be unveiled during the Taipei International Electronics Show (Taitronics) from October 8-12, according to sources.

What is a Memory Stick?
Here's a definition that I found on Google:
"A memory format. A removable, chewing gum sized smartcard produced by Sony. Compatible with most of Sony's extensive portable digital range, but not with equipment produced by other manufacturers. Capacities range from 4MB to 128MB."
www.tiscali.co.uk

The definition above is a bit outdated now for two main reasons:
- Sandisk also produce memory sticks now
- the largest standard Sandisk Memory Stick is 256MB with memory select (has two inbuilt 128MB chips, so you can choose which one to write data to). Sandisk currently have a 2GB Memory Stick Pro.

Sandisk supplies RSMMC for Siemens s65 mobile phone

Sunnyvale, CA, August 19, 2004 – SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) today announced that it will supply Siemens Information and Communication Mobile of Germany, the world's fourth largest producer of mobile phones, with Reduced Size MultiMediaCards (RS-MMC) for sale with the new high-performance Siemens S65 handset.

At roughly half the size of a postage stamp, the SanDisk RS-MMC is one of the world's smallest flash memory form factors. A 32-megabyte RS-MMC will be bundled with sales of the Siemens mobile phones, which are expected to reach dealers in Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America by October 1, 2004.

“This represents a significant OEM design win for the RS-MMC flash memory form factor, which we recently introduced, and we're pleased that Siemens has decided to include our cards with this exciting new mobile phone,” said Heinz H. Schulte, sales director for the mobile phone market segment in Europe. “The tiny size of the RS-MMC, coupled with its high capacity for storage, is well-suited to the demands of this advanced, full-featured handset.” Siemens said that the S65 is the company's first mobile phone to have an integrated 1.3-megapixel still and video camera. Unveiled in March at the CeBIT 2004 trade show in Hannover, Germany, the Siemens S65 also comes with a full suite of business software, a large 65k TFT color screen, a speakerphone, Bluetooth wireless communication, instant messaging, and synchronization with Microsoft Outlook and IBM’s Lotus Notes. The video recorder films at 15 frames per second and the video clips can be e-mailed, played back or stored on the RS-MMC card.

In late July, as part of its mobile products line, SanDisk began shipping retail versions of the RS-MMC in Europe and Asia. The card includes an extender, which allows it to adapt to a full-sized MultiMediaCard/Secure Digital slot. SanDisk's RS-MMC, measuring 24 by 18 by 1.4 mm, is about half the size of a standard MultiMediaCard. The company also offers 64MB and 128MB capacities for RS-MMC.

The market for mobile phones with flash memory card slots is projected to increase rapidly. Market research firm IDC is predicting that manufacturers will sell over 157 million such phones by the end of this year, and that by 2005 the number will reach 246 million. According to a report from Gartner, Inc., worldwide sales of all types of mobile phones totaled 153 million units for the first quarter of 2004, representing a record 34 percent increase over the first quarter of 2003. This robust market is prompting Gartner to predict that mobile phone sales will exceed 600 million units for 2004.

SanDisk, the world's largest supplier of flash memory data storage card products, designs, manufactures and markets industry-standard, solid-state data, digital imaging and audio storage products using its patented, high density flash memory and controller technology. SanDisk is based in Sunnyvale, CA.

Sandisk CompactFlash Memory Card Survives Blast

Cape Giardeau, MO., August 23, 2004 When a demolition crew set off an explosion to bring down an old highway bridge on the Mississippi River, newspaper photographer Don Frazier was so close that his hair stood on end. His digital camera, positioned on a tripod at an even closer point to remotely capture the event, fared much worse. It was blown to bits.

But to Frazier's amazement, there on the ground, inches from the shattered remnants of his new pro-level camera, was his SanDisk 256MB CompactFlash card, which he had owned since 1999. Surprisingly, except for a few nicks, it was unscathed, even though it had been blasted from the camera chamber. And when he inserted the card into a PC reader, up popped an image that has astonished everyone who's seen it.
